Something that came to mind this morning as the air still smelled like fireworks.
The world still smells of fire. But it's ok, we set these ourselves, In joy and exuberance to watch something shine And maybe for the terrifying sounds of explosions That kept the darkness away. Unlike those other fires we set, The ones that seemed like a good idea but got out of hand. We might have called them "five alarm fires" but the sirens got tiresome so we turned them off. Or the fires set out of necessity, for warmth, and the ones that annoy neighbors. But our presence annoys the neighbors and the nights are cold, so we'll keep our fires burning. The world still smells of fire, and we wish it wouldn't, but we're getting used to it.
