(actually, "algorithms" don't lie either -- people do -- but there are 2 topics at play wrt that point that would be separate threads: (1) the use of mentalistic language in describing technology; (2) the role of automation & confirmation biases in bringing about peoples' problematic goals.)

External threats aren't behind the white revanchism on display in media companies. They're doing this because they felt pushed into "diversity hiring" by the 2020 uprising and the "changing cultural moment" gives them the excuse to roll back the clock. They're doing this because *they* want to
