On BBC Radio 4 at 0900 on New Year’s Day, there’s a special programme commemorating 100 years of the Shipping Forecast, still produced by the @metoffice.bsky.social on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency

Today marks 💯 years of the Shipping Forecast. It has been broadcast saving lives at sea, like a lifebuoy floating on choppy waters, it remains a signal in the dark guiding people to safety. As vital as a lighthouse beam, as familiar as a fog horn, as reliable as a lifeboat for those in peril at sea!

Loch Ryan Lighthouse: The lighthouse is south of the Stena ferry port of Cairnryan.

The lighthouse engineer was Alan Stevenson and it became established in 1847. Its character is two red flashes every 10 seconds and it has a range of 12 nautical miles.

I am still thinking about my Northern Ireland Lighthouse weekend. I would walk to Whitehead town to get a newspaper and walk the coastal path back to Blackhead Lighthouse.
