Baffled that my local food bank asks repeatedly for product donations but has made it impossible to figure out how to give them money. I mean come on! you can't tell me they don't want my $250 but do want an old can of bamboo shoots.

How am I doing on day 13 of 14 wearing the medical device whose stickers I am allergic to?

Yesterday at work I said, "Yeah, agreed, the campaign's itchy strategy was good." (The word I wanted was digital)

Just had a slow, hard convo with kid where he had many questions about extended family and alcoholism and why my mother is not in our lives, and eventually he started to sniffle and I said "what's on your mind, buddy?"

"I'm thinking about summer camp and how Jack was mean to me on the pirate ship."

Anyway, I won all my races this cycle. That's not the interesting part.

Nor is a talented and charismatic democratic socialist with good campaign discipline and a lot of money winning in NYC. It's surprising that he broke through to start with; it's very not surprising that he won once he had.

Ah, the day after election day. Also known as the day I can reboot my work laptop for the first time since early September without having to close 10,000 windows.

I realized I never said here, but I posted the thing. All 227,000 words of it.

I've worn a heart monitor* for 1.5 days out of what is going to be 14. I preemptively got the sensitive skin stickers. And I already have a rash. uuuugh. This is going to suck.

*I'm fine

I am in a hotel where the elevators play YMCA at high volume during every transit. What fresh hell is this.

Summer dinner win: crusty sesame bread spread with pesto vinaigrette, layered with fresh mozzarella and peaches, drizzled with honey, finished with smoked flakey salt. Bliss. Would maybe add mint next time.

Real parenting horror movie moment over here.

A tick latched on to Cb's scalp.

I found it.

By kissing their head.

Removal was easy, they're fine.

I....may not be.

One of the great revelations of my 30’s was realizing that I’m not neurotypical, it’s just that my flavor* is not pathologized because it makes me really good at adulting tasks and at making money

*Way too much executive function (yeah that's a thing), + hyperfocus, + some other weird memory stuff

We started harvesting the backyard rhubarb patch 2.5 weeks ago and have so far gotten over 7 pounds. I've made strawberry rhubarb bars, a giant crumble, and rhubarb custard. there is more in the fridge. I sent a bunch home with @treewishes.bsky.social

I can hear it growing out there. send help.

Really want to know how much money is actually changing hands in the workplace betting pool on when our targeted EO is coming.*

*I'm thinking 2-3 weeks**
**fucking bring it is the general sentiment, don't worry about us, we were built for this

The new bluesky web layout is doing something weird with my screenreader where it loses its place and jumps to the end of the page. which is the 'help' link.

So I'll be reading along, and then it pauses and just goes "help....help....help."

big mood.

I think it is really indicative of my current mental state that I got yesterday's Wordle in 2, in under ten seconds.

The word was spite.

Tfw you send a piece of the thing you've been writing for six months to a person you are not married to for the first time because, hey, this thing is pretty good, it should see the light of day.

And you hit send and five seconds later . . . oh no. what if it's secretly terrible?

Cb has flu-B. It's been rough. If they weren't vaccinated, I suspect we'd have gone to the ER. Gotta say the most alarming symptom is not the 5 days of fever, not the declining O2, but the fact that this child has refused pizza and mac&cheese. good god.

They seem to have turned a corner today tho.

"Time for bed, Cb."

"But I have to stack these blocks."

"No, time for bed."

"But what's a 'labor party'?"

How do we get anywhere, really?

187,000 words into this story and I have finally gotten around to going back and writing the opening scene. I have otherwise written this in an almost entirely linear fashion, which is very weird for me. what do you mean you write stories in order? is that even possible?

Child development is wild. We left an early Nov. teacher meeting undecided about whether Cb should go to first grade next year. then independently both got to "yes, they are super ready, let's go" in under 6 weeks. and so did the head of school, who pulled us aside in Dec. to say so.

Anyone else's child currently a hungry maw into which legos must be constantly shoveled by increasingly concerned parents? Like a coal furnace, but with minifigs.

Wow, tonight's line of questioning by the 5 yo got us from "what's the smallest country in the world?" to "...what's religion?" in under three minutes.

writing update: I slowed down once hitting 100k words, by which I mean I am writing at more than a nanowrimo pace and now have 128,000. so, you know, slower.

how are things? well, I am sufficiently worried about my child's health* that when a colleague tried to do a kind mental health check-in yesterday it took me a solid 2 minutes to remember she meant the election.

*asthmatic child with very bad bronchitis. there is no sleep. there is only vigilance.

Wow. the wildest thing about this article is not what's in it, but that it came out pre-election. That doesn't happen if the campaign thinks they can win.
