Today I delivered my favorite career talk of the year during the Business of Medicine rotation at Corewell Health West.

It's my favorite because it brings me joy to have the opportunity to encourage the trainees to think broadly about what their careers and lives will look like in the future.

We know that free food isn’t the solution to physician burnout.

And yet creating intentional spaces where people can connect and feel valued is part of creating a culture of wellbeing.

Happy to have done a little of this for our residents and fellows this morning.

It was a great morning to welcome over 100 new residents to Corewell Health West!

I loved sharing the programming we have available to support their individual wellbeing and how we are changing the system to make medicine a better place to work.

#wellness is about doing both.

Having a leadership title doesn’t make you a good leader.

So much of my job as “wellness” director is working with leaders to help them understand how their level of wellbeing and their behavior directly impacts their team members’ performance and wellbeing.

1/3 Mental illness and occupational distress is common among physicians-in-training (and beyond!).

When I was a #PedsICU fellow, I informally diagnosed myself with depression before seeking therapy and medication. No one around me noticed.

Other than telling my own story about burnout & depression, I’ve never found a better way to get an audience of physicians to open up to me than to ask them what they say to other people when they’re asked, “How are you?”

Reminder: fine is not a feeling, and living the dream is 🚩

Is well-being possible as a #PedsICU physician?

Yes… but it requires redefining the word, bringing change to our workplaces, consistent daily effort, & learning to ask for and accept help.

I’m happy to share a snippet of what I’ve learned in the past 8 years with our fellows today.

I’m not sure who needs to hear this but… some things are just hard.

Coaching is an evidence-based intervention for wellbeing and professional development.

I loved presented the data, my own experience with coaching, and teaching 3 practical coaching skills to the audience at Pediatric Grand Rounds this morning.

I feel so grateful to work in a place that understands the value of coaching.

I benefitted from this program a few years ago, and I’m now proud to be a coach on this team.

I love seeing the difference it makes in the #wellbeing of my physician and APP colleagues.

We know that food isn’t the solution to wellbeing for healthcare workers.

But we also know that feeding groups of people creates community and builds a culture of wellbeing.

I was so happy to collaborate with our physician wellbeing office today to feed 70+ people!

There is not much better than enjoying a pastry and a coffee after a 16-hour #PedsICU overnight shift in the hospital.

But Pączki day will always be the very best day.

Squish picks up 📞 : “Hello, papa? Are you there? Are you still dead? I miss you. Ok bye bye!”
Me: 😭😭😭
Squish: “Want to play mommy?”

Grief is wild on your own. It’s wilder while also trying to understand what your 3-year-old needs from you.

But we muddle through.

“Why did you decide to do these listening sessions?”

Me: “We decided it was important to say out loud that everyone in healthcare is uncertain and many with marginalized identities are terrified.”

Gathering doesn’t solve the reality of the world right now, but it does let us keep going. #BlueSky

I won’t solve the world’s problems tonight, but I was able to provide some milk so my neighbor could finish cooking dinner for her sick kids AND threw in a glass of wine for her because… *gestures vaguely at the state of the planet* …well, you know.

“I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone.”

I’ve learned that when I feel like I don’t know how to help, all I have to do is look around me and an answer always appears.

It doesn’t “solve” the world. But it helps us keep moving forward.

This really sums up today on service.

And being a mom after that.

And just being a person in the world.

Maybe you feel it too.

The most important advice I have for healthcare workers looking to impact their wellbeing today is to take 10 intentional minutes to eat and drink at lunch.

Do it without distractions = eat it with a knife and fork.

You’re not a machine. And even machines get scheduled breaks.
