5. I love a good “what if” and this is probably my favorite in that genre. The fabulous novel “Rodham” (2020) by the fabulous Curtis Sittenfeld. What if Hillary never married Bill? So so well done.

jaa volgens mij begon het als 1 boek, toen werd het een trilogie, en toen kwam er ineens een deel vier. past wel bij Knausgard - endless writing…

4. The artist is present ánd she is dying. One of the aspects that makes this novel fabulous. Read it, you won’t regret it.

3. Isabella Hammad, Enter Ghost (2023). A beautiful and tragic book about two sisters’ connection to their homeland of Palestine - and the (im)possibility of staging a Shakespeare play in the West Bank. Heartbreaking and beautiful.

2. I read this last year, and I’ve loved it. The author spent a night in the Secret Annex of the Anne Frank House, and wrote a beautiful memoir about it. The English title is “When You Listen to This Song. On Memory, Loss and Writing” (2022), which says it all.

1. One of my all time favorites: AS Byatt, Possession (1990). About art history, poetry, love, imagination, and a fair bit of academic detecting (and not to mention, rivalry).
