A post for the tenth anniversary of my father’s death: me, Dad, and Grandma my great-grandmother). The original photograph is tiny and it’s hard to see the climbing plants properly (or anything else for that matter), but I like the sense of movement and determination in this one.

It’s such exciting music! Her brother clearly didn’t understand its restlessness and passion, or was uncomfortable with them (see photo), but seriously, GET WITH THE PROGRAMME, FELIX.
Programme note: The work was performed only once in Fanny’s lifetime, in private. Felix was greatly dismissive of her work, pointing out the the first two movements ‘are not in any particular key’ whatsoever. Perhaps her brother’s disapproval of her carefree disregard of classical convention was the reason she never wrote another quartet. However, equally importantly, she did not alter what she had written. Fanny Mendelssohn’s music requires the players to adopt a unique mindset -it is a world away from the elegance of her brother’s music. Here we find something brilliant, raw and impassioned that refuses to be tempered by politesse and convention.
