He/Him, I program and play Fighting Games, mainly Guilty Gear ACPR and Skullgirls. Venom main, Big Band Enjoyer.
From my notes for a thing I'm writing

"...any game that has a real-time execution based element (Hence the "Action") and takes some elements from the Adventure game genre as well. Specifically puzzle solving, exploration, dialogue systems, and inventory systems..."

Just remember that it's a broad tapestry of a skill, you can go crazy trying to internalize everything at once, make sure you take bite-sized, actionable steps.

And make sure you have some friends to play with. Just playing with randos will drive you crazy.

Pattheflip has some books called "From Masher to Master" these are great resources

Sajam (on YouTube) has made a good quantity of beginner focused fighting game videos

The handshake! We need to play a good set soon.

I find this very frustrating because the latter is universally critical to get right, but the former is only important to an extent. Arguing that the former is just as important as the latter is kind of blind consumerism.

At some point in the discourse, maybe in its inception, the language of people asking for difficulty modulation in games started piggybacking on the language used by differently abled people who want actual physical access to games.

I always find myself having to reinforce the difference between these two things, language very much matters. Because they both matter, but one of these things matters a lot more than the other.

It's the standard response.

The general gamer attention span is corroded to the point of a goldfish.

"It feels like VS fighting games are everywhere now." Takes are just natural because two got announced in a row.

They were calling it "a dark age" last month because there hadn't been big FG news in like a month.

I hate saying it but most of the hate for her comes from like ten guys telling them they should hate her.

Hmm that's another interesting point. My reason to use a stick has always been "I like it" more than it giving me some kind of advantage so I didn't really consider that.
May 31, 2025 at 2:14 AM
Yeah I don't hate that either. It just feels to me as if the unique part of the "stick" is the joystick. Needing a slightly updated layout for face buttons doesn't change anything really.

I kind of just don't understand why stick players in particular act like 7-8 button fighting games are the thing that spell the death of the arcade stick.

Most arcade stick options have come default with 8 button layouts for like a decade now. Is using your pinky that hard?

Not even comfortable agreeing with that label. Like it said that it was a beta but I think that word HAS to mean more than "the word 'beta' is on it"

Once you release multiple season passes and an mtx storefront you're no longer "in beta". Early access, maybe, but you can't delist like they did.
