Towards a Librarianship of the Future: Fostering Cultural Adaptation to Climate Change

The field of library science is paying increasing attention to anthropogenic climate change by exploring best practices for mitigating damage from environmental disasters and participating in climate action. This work is valuable, but it does not necessarily take on the cultural dimensions of climate adaptation. How are unquestioned ideas about time and decay supporting the carbon-heavy preservation of archival materials? How can libraries promote interspecies kinship, consider the legacy of industrial colonialism, and acknowledge the emotional impact of environmental destruction? To approach these questions, this article introduces thinkers from the environmental humanities and Anthropocene scholarship and applies their work to the field of library science. It explores alternatives to linear concepts of time, affective materiality of archival objects, palliative death ethics, and Indigenous perspectives of climate change as the legacy of industrial colonialism. The article concludes by suggesting ways that institutions can promote cultural adaptation to climate change.

While it is tempting to retreat to EBP, debunk the Cass Review for what it gets wrong, and argue that one only needs to “follow the science” to validate the lived realities of trans people, this constitutes a misunderstanding. This is not to say that scientific inquiry is invalid. Rather, the grounds for rejecting the appeals in documents like the Cass Review need not be made in the language of EBP. If trans people must always provide a medical and scientific rationale for trans existence, then trans existence will always function as a medical and scientific question to be answered, not by trans people, but by those who seek to outline the parameters of gender and sex variance in order to further subjugate those who they deem to be variant.

How we publish

Lead Pipe uses an open peer review model (as described in this article from 2012). Each article has at least one internal reviewer and at least one external reviewer. A Publishing Editor coordinates peer review to ensure that it is of adequate standard. All draft articles must be submitted and reviewed using Google Docs. This allows peer reviewers to see and respond to each other’s comments and suggestions, and enables the Lead Pipe editorial board to ensure that external review has been thorough. We encourage discussion between reviewers as part of the peer review process. This provides more clarity for authors, and also allows reviewers and authors to spark off each other’s ideas. The Publishing Editor may also share drafts with other members of the editorial board in order to obtain their opinions and feedback.

We publish high-quality peer-reviewed articles in a range of formats. We expect proposals to include unique and substantial new content from the author. Examples of material we would publish include: Original research with a discussion of its consequences (with or without an argument for action) that makes a unique, significant contribution to the professional literature. Articles using autoethnography, testimonios, or other accounts of the author’s own experience to analyze, theorize, situate, or otherwise contribute new insights to the professional literature. Articles arguing for a particular approach, strategy or development in librarianship, with suggestions for how it might be achieved. Transformative works with additional explanatory or interpretive content. For example, a transcription of an interview or panel discussion, with a substantial introduction explaining the importance of the subject to librarianship and a discussion of related literature.

The library literature has established that toxic leadership and organizational culture can cause or contribute to individuals leaving their organizations. Our study suggests that organizational culture also influences whether an employee is voluntarily or involuntarily staying at the organization, and whether their coping strategies are functional or dysfunctional. We can also see, just as all employees participate in organizational culture in some way, that employees’ dysfunctional coping strategies can feed into and reinforce toxic culture, creating a feedback loop.
