Thalidomide is an even better example, where the defects pre-existed, and plenty folk used it without issue. However the rise in usage correlated with the rise in defects, studies where then done to explain why and it was banned.

It's very likely autism has existed forever. Generally though, if there was a correlation between a rise in autism and a rise in paracetamol use during pregnancy, it would warrant at least some studies. The lead-crime hypothesis is a good example of this, aggression pre-existed.
