US - CANADA DAIRY WARS EXPLAINED IN AMERICAN ENGLISH No one should be surprised that Trump is lying about Canada ripping off the US in trade. Excluding the oil and gas that Canada sells to the US at a deep discount (which the US resells for a huge windfall profit), the US has a trade surplus with Canada in excess of $45 billion a year - meaning the US sells Canada $45 billion more goods and services annually than Canada sells to the US. Canada is ok with getting ripped off by the US because, in turn, Canada offsets this loss by protecting some of its industries (like its dairy industry) because it regards the health of its people and the survival of its small businesses as strategic resources just as the US regards its nuclear arsenal as strategic. As a result, Canada's dairy supply is healthier than the US because of stricter food safety regulations. Canada, for example, bans antibiotics in dairy products and the use of artificial growth hormones in dairy cows. The only additives permitted in Canadian dairy are vitamins A and D. Canada also protects its small family dairy farms (96 cows per farm versus 357 per US farm) to ensure Canada's dairy industry survives in the future. One result of superior husbandry is that Canadian men live nearly 5 years longer than US men (Can men 79.5 vs.US men 74.8) and Canadian women live almost 4 years longer than US women (Can women 83.9 vs US women 80.2). For the record, Canada permits the US to sell 3% of their dairy in Canada duty free a year (a quota the US does not meet).
