Young people only really engage with the big races because they think those are the ones that matter most. They aren’t!! Vote in your locals. Vote for school boards, for mayors, for sheriffs, hell, even vote for your county coroner if given the chance! Democracy only works when you participate.

A childfree lifestyle is totally fine and something that people can aspire to! But they cannot expect the whole of society to ascribe to that belief. Children have a right to public life just as much as adults do. While they shouldn’t be in adult only spaces, they are allowed to be in public ones.

Failing to respect the autonomy and existence of children in society is a slippery slope to fascism. They become useful pawns that cannot think for themselves and reproduce the harms that have been caused to them. Children deserve better.

It forces women back into the home to be caretakers, either as mothers or as hired help, and reinforces the patriarchy. Men are excused from the duty of parenthood and therefore their responsibilities as parents and spouses. Education becomes “teaching that kid a lesson,” but the lesson is cruelty.

I was thinking about this the other day! For me, the way children are treated in US society is an early sign of fascism. Refusing to allow agency, treating them as property, the idea that “children should be seen, not heard” morphing into “children should not exist in public spaces”…
