I mostly print linework, so maybe I just haven't really put it through its paces enough and it doesn't suit for your purposes, sorry. Not specifically for Brother printer, but I've heard ppl say they do the 'setting to photo paper when it's not thing' in general, so maybe worth a try?

I have a Brother MFC-J6510DW that's 12 years old & still doing well (but sometimes needs an elaborate cleaning process). I mostly use it on watercolour paper, so should handle cardstock. Discontinued, so that specific one's not an option, but I generally hear good things about Brother inkjets.
