The census covers Jan ‘24 - Jan ‘25.

So that’s 35% of the government’s five-year forecast leaving before VAT was even added.

The actual impact of year 1 will be seen in the Jan ‘26 census.

People can’t afford it and/or don’t think it’s worth it at these prices.

Fantastic! Let’s keep it up.

Best case scenario is that Reform f-up so bad on a local level that they see themselves out during the next GE. Give them enough rope and all that…

It’s because the Lib Dems bring the best of One Nation Tories, New Labour and Greens together.

If they went for decriminalising/legalising Cannabis and said they wanted to cut taxes, they could be a real force in the next GE.

That’s not how VAT works. And care home fees are exempt.

The ones that are non-profit don’t. And they aren’t taxed at 20%, the parents are. Hope that helps.

The fact that they are renting buses and running what is effectively a marketing campaign, but haven’t taken the action they seek (which is within their gift) is very telling.

Those who can do. Those who can’t preach.

Yup. A tale as old as time.
March 29, 2025 at 8:14 PM
This! I actually find the virtue signalling insulting. It would go a long way to shame the government into a wealth tax by simply putting their money where their mouth is.

There’s a dedicated page on HMRC for voluntary contributions.

The patriotic millionaires don’t have to wait for a law.

If they genuinely believe in the mission and have the logistics sorted as they say, why not demonstrate leadership by sending HMRC the equivalent of what they would pay in a wealth tax?

This could shame others - including the government.
March 29, 2025 at 7:25 PM
In all seriousness, why don’t they just tax it themselves in the form of a voluntary contribution to HMRC?

They seem to have the logistics it all figured out, what’s stopping them?

Plus, it’ll shut up everyone who says it’s not possible.
March 29, 2025 at 7:08 PM
Can’t they just send the extra money to HMRC? There’s an option for voluntary contributions. No need to ask permission from the government.

So there are more kids applying for sixth form this year because there are simply more kids?

I suppose the reason why doesn’t matter though.

Surely it’s a good thing that more kids go to state sixth form and fewer go to private?
March 29, 2025 at 7:04 PM
Not expecting any reaction. I just think it’s a shame that while everyone argues about the ideology of private vs state, no one’s noticing the broader structural shift in asset ownership.

Meanwhile, Labour are cutting state school budgets and they have to do even more with even less.
March 29, 2025 at 6:59 PM
The Mail is most recent article. But it’s been a growing trend since 2008.

My kids attend a fee-paying progressive school and I’m rather stoic about it all.

The big public schools like Eton and Charterhouse will be fine. The smaller indies in commuter towns are merging or folding.

There’s been a record number of applications to sixth forms this year. Which makes sense with regard to timing of VAT and expected fee increases in September ‘25

Foreign acquisition of private schools is interesting because their endgame is not education in Britain.

They buy distressed schools for asset value, and saddle them with debt.

IP is expanded abroad. Then they close the original schools.

British taxpayers foot the bill for job losses, etc.

They are planning ahead. But, most schools aren’t Eton.

So they are merging and/or reducing headcount to save money. Both create layoffs.

Schools can’t absorb 100% of the VAT and the extra costs. Fees are going up.

Parents are choosing to exit at sixth form, GCSE, or not enter at all.
March 29, 2025 at 6:22 PM
Not quite. Especially as the budget changes have yet to take effect. Chinese investors are loving this though. They are gaining evermore soft power by buying up small indie schools.
