Since I'm sick and not supposed to be writing, I've instead decided to do another movie screening tonight in the Discord server. We're watching The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and Nosferatu (1922).

Replayed Rayman Origins over the weekend, and it's even better than I remember.

I've always been drawn to Rayman's blend of demanding platforming and its sense of artistry. Feels like a perfect showcase of the uniqueness of video games, and somehow I've failed to mention Rayman on my channel...

Random though, but I just remembered how good Skyward Sword's final boss was. One of the central themes of that game, fate and free will, distilled into a focused vision that exemplified why the game's combat was so brilliant. Beyond incredible for a Zelda finale.

Other than that, Berserk and Vagabond are obvious, must-read manga. Berserk is great for just persevering through life itself, while Vagabond uses Musashi's journey as a metaphor for Takehiko Inoue's own artistic journey. Both have some of the best artwork I've seen in the medium.

I'm currently reading Medalist. It's about a girl pursuing figure skating so that she can have something to be proud of, and a coach that wants to accomplish something with his career and guide her to victory.

The art captures the intensity of the emotions and nuance in that sport. I love it.

A week ago I had a t-shirt on outside. Today, there's black ice on the roads.

Winter hits fast around these parts.

That's about it from me. Some other stuff I learned:

- Prime 2's development, though truncated, was actually more relaxed and structured than Prime 1! Not nearly as stressful despite the crunch.

- Retro was left without power due to ice storms during MP Remastered. Paired with the pandemic... Jeez

Here we go. The bounty hunter concept art. I'm just gonna include my favourites. Love how deeply soaked the art is in their individual identities through colour and aura.

HOLY SHIT THE STEAMLORD ART...

The Luminoth art... Elegant yet so creepy... Gorgeous

Holy shit this Ing concept art rocks. The Ing always struck me as some of the more mindlessly violent and frankly terrifying enemies in Metroid, and this art sells that.

This thing looks more like an early concept for Half-Life 2 than it does Metroid, but I love it.

The fact that this is a conscious, intelligent life form with feelings and thoughts really comes through in the art. The Phazon, cybernetic and Metroid enhancements are harrowing.
November 6, 2025 at 2:27 AM
I have begun reading Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective. This Phazon Suit design is an INCREDIBLE work of science fiction. It looks so fucking vile and corrupt, just as you'd expect out of a Phazon Suit. Certainly a bit much for the game's art direction, but I love it.

They really should just start doing random incarnations of Linkle in each Musou game who just goofs around until the day is saved. I cannot stress just how much better the games would be if she were there...

Aaaaand speaking of the Zelda Musou games, I cannot fully articulate just how much of Hyrule Warriors I've played across all three versions. The DW8 engine and structure, managing keeps, adventure mode, and the Zelda flavour made it such a dangerously addictive game.
November 4, 2025 at 9:48 PM
Speaking of Zelda, been replaying Echoes of Wisdom for my TOTK video, and I forgot just how much I enjoy it. Having to think completely different about approaching the game, whilst also it being structural more similar to the old games, makes for a really awesome blend. Zelda is so cute in it, too.
