If you put up a union jack or George’s Cross in middle of a hate campaign against migrants, asylum seekers & people of colour that used those flags as branding, you knew what you were doing even if you didn’t have sufficient courage in your abysmal convictions to say it. This must be said.

In fact, relevant in two phases; Gilroy was writing this work during ”phase 2” and it continues to grow in relevance during phase 3.

It’s definitely there in his earlier work; he was way too ready to concede - albeit not in these words - that there was a meaningful distinction in practice between the BNP’s “illegitimate” racism and ordinary “legitimate” racism. But this is a problem with a lot of scholarship on British fascism.

The hour is too late to luxuriate in the illusion that British racism is a matter of a small band of eccentric fascists among a majority of otherwise decent and anti- or non-racist people.

Used to love visiting Buxton back when I lived in Sheffield, so sorry to see it embrace spiteful racism (although hope lies with the young).
