The folks at Tracksmith asked me to write a little bit about The Michigan because of a story I wrote in 2018 … and I got to explain why I think people coming back to that workout — and that story. big-workouts-the-michigan.tracksmith.com/big-workouts...
Because isn’t that sometimes the point of a workout? To prove to yourself that you are strong, that you are fit. Because if you can’t handle it now, how are you going to handle it on race day? The Michigan shows you what you’re made of. Which is why we keep coming back.

Looks like they called up the bib design team from Rio for another chance
Remember the scene in 'Miracle' when Herb Brooks kept saying, "Again" each time the team finished a down-and-back? I think it was a similar scene for the team making these Rio bib numbers. "Bigger," the bib designer told his or her team every time they printed out a sample. "Bigger," the designer said each time another bib was brought out, even as some quietly protested in hushed tones. "We won't be able to see the jerseys soon"... "Bigger." "The printers are going to run out of ink" ... "Bigger." "Aren't they big enough already?" ... "Bigger." There was no happy ending in the printing room in Rio, though. The design team had no Mike Eruzione to put an end to the madness - and these bibs got too big.

The largest wooden dome in the world is in Marquette, Michigan, at Northern Michigan U and it is one heck of a sight to see … my two kiddos enjoyed a little run on the football field

A wonderful thing about running is it’s all so connected. A fun thing I learned about Dellinger about 7 years ago is he had a hand in creating the famed workout The Michigan. A sad day for track to say goodbye to a legend.
It is cliché to start a running story with Steve Prefontaine, but that is exactly where The Michigan begins. Ron Warhurst was about one year into his coaching stint at the University of Michigan when he met famed Oregon Coach Bill Dellinger for the first time when walking through an airport. It was only a few weeks after Pre died, and as coaches are wont to do, they, as Warhurst puts it, “were B.S.’ing” and talking about workouts. Before he died, Pre had done this workout in Eugene that piqued Warhurst’s interest. “We ran him a 1200 on the track,” Dellinger told him. “Then he went out to the trail and ran two or three miles at five-minute pace.” Then, Dellinger explained, Pre came back to the track for another 1200-meter rep. It was genius, Warhurst thought. “You’re busting your ass on the track,” Warhurst says looking back on the conversation today. “Then you go do some pace work. Then you bust your ass again.” He couldn’t get the workout out of his mind, and the seed was planted.

"The Monster at the end of this Book" is a grind while reading in my Grover voice. My biggest disappointment as a parent so far, however, is my kids taking no interest in the book we wrote and illustrated for them. Hoping the tide turns someday with "What Would You Do If You Pooped Your Pants?"

However, the joke is on the scammer, because now I have 260 new friends producing the greatest email thread ever. It’s like when people are replying all to a work email telling everyone to stop replying all, but it’s just great ITYSL gifs and quotes. Thanks, scammer

I definitely got scammed buying a set of 3 I Think You Should Leave Xmas ornaments thanks to an Instagram ad. Realized it when I, along with 260 others, received an email from “admin.”

Based on my sample size spending large amounts of time at Michigan State, Columbia and Georgetown, I have yet to see a university facilities team that isn’t top-notch. This awesome photo via MSU LinkedIn is proof that MSU’s folks have those sidewalks runnable nearly all hours of the day.
