Energy insecurity doesn't just affect energy policy preferences—it spills over into climate and social policy support too.

Is support for #NetZero policies lower amongst the energy insecure?

Cost of living concerns generally does not weaken support for Net Zero policies. The exception being from fossil fuel taxes, which were already politically contested, which sees some declines in support.
September 21, 2023 at 10:10 AM
It's important to note that not all policies aiming for #NetZero are equal in terms of public acceptance.

While subsidies and appliance receive majority support, fossil fuel taxes are highly contested.

The Labour Party, however, do not appear to be picking up these voters. While approximately 12% of previous Conservative voters intend to vote for Labour in the next election, this barely changes when considering those expecting energy insecurity and not.
September 21, 2023 at 10:09 AM
Individuals' expecting energy insecurity who previously voted Conservative are also significantly less likely to vote Conservative again. Only 43% of energy insecure individuals who voted Conservative in 2019 intend to vote for the Conservatives in the next election
September 21, 2023 at 10:09 AM
This is consequential for the next election.

Individuals' who expect to face such difficulties in the next year are significantly less likely to vote for the Conservative Party and more likely to simply not vote.
September 21, 2023 at 10:08 AM
Is this being driven by cost-of-living concerns?

In our survey we measure individuals' energy insecurity: difficulties paying energy bills.

34% of individuals in our survey expect to face difficulties paying their energy bills in the next 12 months

I probably don't need to tell you that the Conservatives are doing badly in the polls
