I think it would be challenging to apologise after he was forced to at a congressional hearing. Although they were right to hold him accountable, the aggressive nature of the demand for an apology may have caused some kind of trauma linked to it.

I'll be sure to pay more attention to your blog! I know there has been some wins, but we always have to caveat it with the short list of positive results rather than see true rapprochement. Moving in the right direction is great, but the inertia of IOs is astounding.

Oh yeah that's very true - or from sites with pay walls and suggests some sites are more reliable than others!

How can they show the public how the decisions are being made, especially in a democratic "police by consent" state.
September 14, 2024 at 3:00 PM
Yes and some models have begun to produce the citations in the form of a link. This could be fairly straightforward for LLM sites to have a metadata window to show its workings. The issue then is when non-LLM software is making parole risk decisions or sifting job applications.

The confusing thing about the human response is that many are fooled into thinking these systems have lifelike thoughts yet simultaneously trust that a mathematical "logic machine" can't be wrong or biased. The programmes are as risky as we are ignorant in many ways.
September 14, 2024 at 2:47 PM
Ah yes, the issue of assigned "weights" in the programme itself for the values and data it processes is key to understanding the gender, racial, sexual (etc...) biases being baked into what many believe are logic machines.

This is an ongoing issue as is the use of odd stock images of humanoid/robotic figures when people report on AI systems. There is even the debatable if AI is even Artificial or Intelligent. We should try to find a way to make the language clear to understand but also consistent!
September 14, 2024 at 2:41 PM
Ahh I may not bother then!
September 14, 2024 at 1:33 PM
Yes, you're right! As I've said I know I'm being reductionist. I don't think I have the characters here to get into what drawing "legitimacy" means, and how the UDHR is not universal and mailable to some actors when it comes to war.

Hahha that's great! And who would be a thrush or swallow.....?
September 14, 2024 at 11:50 AM
I think you're right in that they are working towards a solution, but to me (and I do stand to be corrected!), the very fact that there are so many frameworks and agreements around on the same topics shows their lack of actual, long term change.
September 14, 2024 at 11:39 AM
Which I feel is in agreement with your final point. The structures themselves are only as good as those who create/uphold them. The difficulty is that it is agreements between states on something that doesn't recognise their statehood if not controlled. It's a catch 22 not being discussed enough.
September 14, 2024 at 11:24 AM
Oh no I am fully aware of these agreements and how international organisations and groups have reached a certain level of rapprochement. I was being a touch ironic because the systems we have clearly are not meeting the needs we currently have. I know this is very reductionist but I still feel true.

By conspiracy theory I only refer to the panning
September 14, 2024 at 11:03 AM
Or he is not doing too well...I don't want to fuel conspiracies as that could take away from what he is saying here - but if not a double then he is starting to look weak
September 14, 2024 at 10:58 AM
We have the same issue with tech as we do with climate change - they are border and state agnostic, it is what people do with/about them that has the potential to undermine some of the constructed ideas of statehood and sovereignty. I wonder if an international legal framework would help?
September 14, 2024 at 10:49 AM
Is it just me or does he not look like "him" here...
September 14, 2024 at 10:45 AM
Have you considered the Great Tit vs Trump?
September 14, 2024 at 10:33 AM
Yeah I don't find much on dyspraxia relating to adults either! Although on Dyslexia - "The Gift of Dyslexia" by Ronald D. Davis is one I have on my wishlist as it looked decent!
