Problems can only be solved if they can be heard. The Utah Native American Summit was successful as it has opened lines of communication between the tribes and the state agencies. These ongoing conversations will help find solutions to challenges in even our most remote communities.

Today we met with Mr. Colin Gray, Head of the Scottish Government in the United States. Scotland and the beehive state share similar goals when it comes to energy production, higher education, and technological innovation. This growing relationship will benefit Utahns for years to come.

On Primary Election Day, I was visited by Hope Rice, the 14-year-old great-great-great-granddaughter of Seraph Young, and her family, visiting from Maryland. Seraph was the first woman in the United States to vote under an equal suffrage law on Feb. 14, 1870, right here in Utah.

Yesterday was a hard day for the Monroe fire, but community spirit is strong. Last night I attended the public meeting along with around 100 residents, some of whom have lost homes, been evacuated, or lost power.

This morning I joined 17 other secretaries of state for a productive meeting with senior White House officials about the use of federal databases to assist states in maintaining accurate voter rolls. We appreciate the way they are listening to and incorporating our feedback.

137 years ago the government paid to put carp in Utah Lake. Turned out to be a bad idea. Now we’re paying to get them out. This morning I saw members of the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program using new technology to remove this invasive species.

The North Capitol Building is a work of art. It will house the Museum of Utah as well as additional office space. Next year, it will open to the public for everyone to come and enjoy.
