Most stars are red dwarfs, and they have more frequent solar flares and CMEs than the sun. Also, a habitable planet around a red dwarf would need to be much closer to it than we are to the sun, so they'd be way more vulnerable. And yes our magnetic field protects us from what the sun does throw out
