Besides all the uses already mentioned, it's great when you're drying apples. The uniform rings make for even drying.

Gel in a can! Goo is amorphous. I LOVE this stuff; my sister teases me to no end and buys it just for me. Homemade Concord grape ketchup is also a good accompaniment to holiday meals.

It looks like it fastens on the side...is that your take?

Sundays at Moosewood has a recipe for a tofu shepherd's pie where you freeze the tofu, crumble it (it gets strangely spongy), make the base, add mushroom gravy, then top with mashed potatoes. I made it once many years ago and remember it being good.

I haven't had a tree since before I got two kittens — so 2007.

I’ve been in a bit a rut, tired of all the things I typically eat. But I have both salmon and smoked salmon in my freezer. And celery, onions, potatoes, and carrots. Thank you for the inspiration.

Trout is just lovely with the cucumbers peeking out.

I'd eat that! Looks delicious.

Look at those white whiskers. What a little beauty!

Tillamook has long been serving a grilled cheese in their restaurants that uses a mixture of Kewpie and butter to grill the sandwich. I read an article awhile back in Parade mag about the backstory of how their test kitchen developed the recipe. They're just now bringing the goo to market.

I have a Chinese cookbook with recipe for braised beef with noodles that has cinnamon and star anise in the broth. Need to revisit!

That looks so good! What am I looking at? What kind of meat? How (besides chile heat) is it seasoned?

I sometimes see it in stores, mostly specialty stores that also sell golden syrup and the like. Whenever I see it, I think of Eugenia and having Easter underneath the avocado tree in her backyard. She was my great-grandmother's neighbor, and I loved her dearly; she taught me how to play Scrabble.

Spoon bread! I haven't had it since I was a child. An older family friend was from Texas and served it with sorghum syrup for Easter.

I made the recent soup without a recipe. I have several books with recipes; let me look, and I'll get back to you.

They said the test kitchen worked on the recipe for something like a year, trying different cheeses, combinations of cheeses, and fats for cooking. Their mission was to create gold-standard recipes without cost considerations driving the project. I think the article I read was from Parade magazine.

I've read that Tillamook serves a grilled cheese at the factory restaurant that is the Platonic ideal of bread, cheese, fat, and heat. They use multiple cheeses inside and the kewpie/butter mix outside for grilling. Recipe can be found online.

I've made something similar with garbanzos, lamb, and noodles.

It's been stormy where I am, so last week I made Cuban black bean soup. I'm assembling a big lasagna today (made the sauce this weekend) and will freeze lunch-size portions. I love pulling the reheated portions out of the oven; it smells so cozy! Next up: Just bought some tomatillos for chile verde.

What's so great about this is not Wallace Shawn's storied career but the excitement, hopefulness, and happiness the young woman is feeling in this moment. She'll remember this (waving arms around) for the rest of her life.
