I agree that Devers is an incredible offensive talent, and I can see why Red Sox fans are upset, especially considering the team’s history, which mostly precedes Breslow. But if he really pissed off ownership and they think they will regret the contract, it makes sense to get out while they can.

Are we sure that they lied to him? That’s a pretty serious accusation. Just because we didn’t know what the Red Sox plans were doesn’t mean that they weren’t transparent with Devers. It’s also possible that Devers’ poor health when he arrived to spring training complicated things.

As a Yankee fan, I can say that a very expensive long-term contract for a DH is not a good idea. Devers signed this contract before Breslow arrived. It’s now become clear that Devers is a poor defensive 3B and not open-minded about alternatives. This was an opportunity to get out from under this.

I think this is different than the Betts deal. They’ll certainly have a lot of money to spend on whatever they want over the course of his contract.

The most logical explanation is that he dropped his arm angle for the same reason that many other pitchers have dropped their arm angles this year: the most recent research suggests lower arm angles reduce arm injuries.
