"Due process" means that before the government can punish you, take your property, or restrict your freedom, it must follow established legal procedures that are fair and give you a chance to defend yourself.

* Take your property for public use without paying you for it
* Take away your life, freedom, or possessions without following fair legal procedures

In simpler terms, the US government cannot...
* Force you to stand trial for a serious crime without a grand jury first reviewing the case (except during military service in wartime)
* Try you twice for the same crime
* Force you to testify against yourself
