She never called again.

Sometimes I still think of her and wonder what happened. Maybe she figured out she wasn’t getting through and corrected it. But honestly? It’s small and petty but I hope I cost her the job.

And to that bakery—YOU’RE WELCOME

Phone rings and I know it’s her. Machine picks up and she starts to say she’s not going to make it in. I rush across the room and answer before she can finish and I say, “IF YOU ARE NOT HERE IN FIFTEEN MINUTES DON’T BOTHER COMING BACK!” And slam down the receiver (25 years ago).

I couldn’t understand why she wasn’t fired, because they were NOT getting the calls? They were no-call no-shows, sometimes more than once a week!🤷🏻‍♂️😮

So finally one day I’m coming home from the bar, it’s 2 AM and I had been drinking…

The calls would go to my machine (yes, this was a long time ago) and the ringing and answering would wake me up but I couldn’t ever get there in time to answer. Was driving me crazy…

That’s my usual instinct!

The mood I’m going for is either
1. isolation/desolation/loneliness or 2. Peace/escape/quiet.

And I like a pleasing aesthetic. Maybe it’s not confrontational enough—the world could use more agitation—I used to do a lot of that but I’m not in that era right now.
