I think it's likely a coping mechanism of sorts, I'm no psychologist. But I took an astrophysics class in university and a lot of people dropped out, not because of the material's difficulty, but because of the existentialism that came with it.

And those galaxies are far as I know all thousands of light years across, our own being about 100000 light years. The grand scale is incredible. We occupy nothing.
