Oh for sure! I think the game that probably made me understand the split best was Electric Bastionland, just as a game which is both rules-light and procedure-heavy. I've been following some of the OSR discussion and my mental model lines up with the onion but I haven't written on it in more depth.

It is one of the hazards of responding to someone else's article, you end up building an onion (heh) of layered contexts and definitions. My thoughts on procedures and mechanics are entirely couched in the preceding onion article which I was responding to: dododecahedron.blog/2025/11/22/t...
The OSR Onion
The OSR may be best understood as a layered approach to design centered around a specific way of writing, refereeing, and playing adventures.

The session also served to prove that 'roll for hoverbike' and 'roll for electoral sentiment analysis' are a winning combination that the mechanics aren't ready for.

It's over 40 years old, so on second thought maybe pay a bit more and get that Toyota I linked earlier. Miles are low, but years are years.

Whether it's the Toyota or the Nissan though, you'll need to be at least a little handy. Vegetable oil conversion aside, most mechanics aren't familiar with these things and a lot of parts need to be shipped from Japan. Especially with diesels.

Nah, get this one: www.duncanimports.com/used/Nissan/...
Stick shift blue Nissan? Let's go. If you can't get down to Virginia to pick it up it might be another grand to ship it to New York. The dealer has a preferred shipper so you can get a quote from them for a real number if you're serious.

Totally. The issue with the 'meme trucks' being gas isn't so much on the buyer, it's that companies like Duncan (the one I linked, they're an importer/dealer in Virginia) are going to buy trucks that they know will sell, which means the diesel Toyotas and the like are thinner on the ground.

Most of the kei trucks are gas, but there are a few diesel ones out there. However, the meme trucks like Subaru Sambars and Honda Actys are almost all gas. You'll need something a little uglier and unloved: www.duncanimports.com/used/Toyota/...

Even news is split this way. FOX, CNN, network syndicates, etc. all sell the perception of being informed. S&P Global, Bloomberg, FactSet et. al. sell actionable information. The places where people really get messed up are the outlets that purport to be the latter but are the former.

Free Phipps and museum memberships was something I did not take for granted when I was in college, it was great (also living up the street helped).
