For me, it's his constant lack of trust in Egwene's competence, but mostly his hero complex: the idea that he's not destined to be a decisive player in the war against the Shadow simply doesn't fit in his brain, and he dies exactly because of it. Is it understandable? Yes. But it's still infuriating

I haven't watched the show past season one, so I'll assume it's a matter of it doing a poor job at presenting the Shadow. The DO is ontologically evil. The Forsaken are a group of murderers, rapists, torturers, and overall petty people. It doesn't get more morally unambiguous than Light vs Shadow.
