AFSS 2024- Will Higgisson talked about an amazing discovery of a 2nd olive perchlet population in the lower Murray-Darling Basin 🏞️🐟

Surprisingly, Will found the new population was genetically distinct & had survived the millennium drought in deep human-developed ponds 🌊🐟

Plenary speaker Erin O'Donnell made us think about the rights of rivers 🌊⚖️

We see water as a resource that we manage/control, but is this the relationship we want?
Instead of the usual extraction narrative in Australia, what do we want FOR the river and how do we get there WITH the river?

AFSS 2024 started off with a revolutionary talk by Jonathan Tonkin on flow modification 🌊

Key message: We're monitoring & seeing in realtime flow alterations destroying freshwater communities. Instead, we need proactive forecasting so we can change our management before impacts are even detected.

I've had so many great opportunities & experiences in Australia & internationally talking about my research, with the aim to help us start proactively preparing for and preventing this invasive threat to protect our freshwater ecosystems 🏞️🐟🌿

I finished my PhD in 2023 & I monitored illegal and unregulated pet fish trade online in both pet stores & on social media 👩🏻‍💻🐟

We found a diverse & thriving online industry with a widespread customer & supplier base largely involving illegal fish, including many previously unrecorded in Australia 🖱️

At Fathom Freshwater Consulting my research focuses on current & future threats to Australian freshwater ecosystems from invasive fish, mostly via the pet industry 🔎🐟⚠️

This is my own business & I've been privileged to work with the Queensland government & the Murray-Darling Basin Authority 🦘🇦🇺

With so many new followers (thank you!) I think it's time I introduce myself 👋 🐟
