Entomologist Max Ferlauto counted up the butterflies and moths that emerged in spring on lawns that had been raked, or not, in the fall. Far fewer emerged where leaves had been removed. Rake less! See butterflies more!

Do no fall yard work…. And save more bugs. They’re surviving winter under the leaves, looking like leaves, in dead flower stalks, in branches and twigs, and in the soil. Or attached to a branch, like this swallowtail chrysalis. Leave the garden be and go have some tea instead.
