To me, it echoes the story of the Kirtland’s Warbler and the Jack Pine stands of the northeastern woodlands, though that bird is responding very well to conservation efforts.

Pictured here with Giant Cane, a species of North American bamboo that used to compose enormous canebreak ecosystems in the southeast. Sadly, with the mass destruction of this ecosystem, we also lost the hyperspecialized home of these warblers too.

Even with this update, it is clear the team has ignored users and plans to continue this grant anyways. iNaturalist's community has always provided these explanations for free, and now that exerience will be replaced w/ GenAI slop in whatever trial they pilot and force upon us later. Great.

the entire reason I use iNaturalist is that it’s really fun when scientists and other wildlife observers find my photos and confirm the ID using their human expertise and I get to feel like I helped a person with their research

you are taking away what’s special about the app if AI does that
