While July 1 is Canada Day it is also Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Canadian province has its own Memorial Day and National War Memorial which predates its joining Canada in 1949. It commemorates the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at the Battle of Beaumont, July 1, 1916 during WWI.
