Mostly he wants the most power and wealth, and making America rich and powerful because it would be his great legacy. We are now back in the days of pre and post WW1, when the robber baron kings and emperors made a grab for all the territories they wanted based on power, wealth and bargaining.

No doubt our strategists will try to maintain all options, though a time may come when we have to stand up and be counted on what we believe.

Meanwhile, we shouldn’t underestimate the winning cunning of Trump. He is an arch negotiator in getting what he wants.

We could keep hanging on the US coattails and hope they see us as a key military outpost and rescue us if needed. Or we could try to create an alternative bloc of middle-sized democracies, with SE Asian and S Asian nations, the Scandi group, NZ and Canada, maybe Europe.

It’s probably the best they can hope for with their bargaining power.

As for Europe, they probably won’t get anything much and are equally worried about where they stand on defence now the US is less supportive. As they should be.

And Australia? We don’t matter much.

and not to lose face in the outcome. Russia may well bide its time after a ceasefire and take control gradually through economic power. They also win the hero Zelenskyy’s resignation.

Ukraine will gain nominal sovereignty, and NATO membership, though NATO has just been devalued

He will get the dollars through the deal he’s cut with Russia to share the rare mineral wealth. Coincidentally he challenges the Russia-China connection by forging an improved relationship with Putin. He also understands Putin wants Ukraines minerals, arable land, to get rid of sanctions,

If we examine Trump’s actions on Ukraine from a salesman’s deal perspective, which is his approach, then we can understand why he’s doing it.

He wants: the war to end quickly, because he promised it; and the US to get its loaned money back.
