Hey y'all! Here's an overview of my top surgery consult with David Whitehead in NYC. Let me know if y'all have any questions!
For those interested, this is what happened at my top surgery consult. This consult was with David Whitehead in New York City. Sharing this recap/review in hopes it will help others with their surgery First, a note on Whitehead's bedside manner. He's nice, and introduces themselves as someone who uses any pronouns. She's a little brusque and rushed though; I did not get much time to talk to him and mostly talked to the assistant on staff First, they did a thorough chest examination to make sure I didn't have abnormalities or lumps. Then, they measured my chest from several different angles, including measuring the distance between my nipples and my shoulders, my nipples and the bottom of my chest, and the circumference under my armpits. Whitehead decided that what I likely will need is a double incision with a nipple graft. What that will mean is they will make incisions above and below my nipple, and will use a cookie cutter tool to cut my nipples and areola into a more masc size before reattaching them. I also will have liposuction on the sides to reduce the fat deposits around my chest/near the breast area After measuring me and giving me a brief overview of the recommended surgery, the doctor left me with an assistant who walked me through a power point presentation with example pictures of both surgeries that went right and some examples of common complications (dog-earing, nipple hyperpigmentation). I originally thought that I would be getting more of a "man boob" aesthetic, but Whitehead said I will be mostly flat with some tissue left behind so I don't have a completely hollow/flat look My next steps are to get letters from my mental health provider and my regular doctor, as well as to get a negative nicotine test. Once I'm able to complete those steps, it will take six to eight weeks for insurance to approve the procedure, and another two and a half months before the actual surgery I did circle back on the thc question and the rule of thumb is no thc, including gummies, for two weeks before and after surgery. This is both because it might inhibit healing, but also because it might mess with the anesthesia before the surgery. But the healing factor seemed to be the major thing. I was told one patient went back to gummies right away and had holes in their chest from where healing had been inhibited, so as much as I love weed, I'll be laying off beforehand Some of the other major complications we discussed were hematomas (rare), scarring (inevitable), and possibly getting angry pimples where the sutures are while they work themselves out. Most hematomas are small and can be worked out in the office (the excess blood removed by a needle) but some are major and require an emergency room visit. That kind of complication is rare and would be immediately noticeable. I was told in addition to the pain and bruising it would be like I never had surgery because of the swelling Other than that, there were a lot of notes about aftercare. In addition to addressing my psychiatric hospitalization in my letter, I also will need to address how I will handle six weeks without work. I will also need a compression vest and a lot of medical supplies like gauze and tape. Being real, I will probably need a lot of community support when the time comes. Overall it was a really good but information packed visit. I really want to share this process with y'all because I couldn't find a lot of start to finish overviews on the process, for this surgeon or for any others. Please let me know if y'all have questions or feedback I should keep in mind as I move forward
