That was, y'know, over 20 years ago or something. Which is both a lot and not all that much. How recently it was that we didn't even have songs in the mainstream. How isolating it was to be a young weird bisexual disaster and not have any songs about how fucking awkward that was.

When I was a teenager, the only songs that were explicitly about loving people of the same gender were from TATU, and as deeply and absurdly problematic as TATU were, you can bet I listened to their first album on repeat a whole bunch (it was genuinely pretty catchy too, not sorry).

And it's... kind of crazy to me that songs like this just exist now. It's the kind of song I needed when I was a teenager, having unrequited crushes on friends in a group of people that were considerably less queer than my friend groups are as an adult. (Roleplayers, innit.)

The song in question is 'More Than A Friend' by girli. It is about that classic and well-established queer coming of age moment of having a crush on one of your best friends and not really being sure if she's into women or not, and all the angst therein.

And I've not had one of those in Some Time.
