In the Middle Ages, medicine was not necessarily limited to just male practitioners. Women often saw roles as midwives, but a physician with one of the longest-lasting reaches as far as medical knowledge was Trota of Salerno: a female physician and medical instructor in the 11th/12th centuries.

The Salerno Medical School, predates the Crusades by nearly 100 years! An image of the school found in a copy of Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine (completed c. 1025CE) kept in Bologna depicts a multicultural gathering of scholars and physicians.

Random history fact: The Crusades was not as integral as providing medical science to the west as many think. Rather, contrary to belief, there was already a rich history of Christians, Jewish people, and Islamic people already teaching and sharing their writings in places like the Salerno School!
