The new characters are far less cringe than I expected and added to the cast nicely. The *magic* was also somehow more grounded than the nonsense in its predecessor.
The primary antagonist was comically evil but the whole movie was comically over the top so it worked.

I was looking forward to an adaptation closer to the book instead of the cliche/tropey versions common to contemporary culture but unfortunately we got the latter.
It sacrifices so many of the originals themes for the sake of cinematic action set pieces and bad CGI.

It definitely wasn't what I expected from its portrayal in contemporary culture but its themes of humanity and creating life really hit for me.
