That great feeling when you’re reading your student’s work and instantly know it’s destined to become a reference on the subject. 😭

The jabuticaba tree grows grape-like berries directly on its trunk and branches, a unique method called cauliflory that has fascinated and puzzled people for centuries. This unusual trait is one of several challenges in cultivating this Brazilian tree outside its native habitat.

Marc Bloch revolutionized the way we study history, not just the Middle Ages, though that was his specialty. In WWII he joined the resistance & was eventually captured, tortured & executed by the Gestapo. Entry into the Pantheon means that he will deservedly rest among the greatest heroes of France

Just got out of a session discussing a great MA thesis showing how slave-based coffee production in nineteenth century Brazil influenced the history of British Ceylon between 1830-1860, with a detailed analysis of the strategies pursued by local elites to compete in the world market. Great stuff💯

Waterways were not just a part of the landscape, but a part of the broader cultural world of the Early Middle Ages. In her book, @medievalpenguin.bsky.social brilliantly connects our textual references to such rivers with the experienced landscape. (5/?)
