We show relevant adsorption (ads) of the hydrophobic contaminant HCB to 21 bentonite minerals. Ads varied by orders of magnitude. Highest ads was in the range of ads to organic matter. We discuss impact of various clay characteristics on ads strength. Results are relevant for POP fate and retention.

We provide concentrations of 53 PCBs, annual loads, and congener patterns for five mines. 🧪

Lower-chlorinated congeners occur in highest concentrations, not the six indicator PCBs.

Single congener concentrations (pg-ng/L range) sum up to loads of 0.1-0.7 kg/a per mine due to high water volumes.

Mine water effluents are current point sources of PCBs discharged to the environment. 🧪

We provide a specifically optimized SPME-GC-MS method for sensitive analysis of biphenyl and 58 PCB congeners from small water sample aliquots with low LOD (0.004–0.58 ng/L).
