I also like Fastly’s soft purge with stale-whilst-revalidate and stale-while-error so the refresh of the cache is done after the user gets a cached version - or if our backend errors for any reason

Yea - we use Fastly and surrogate keys a lot for metacpan.org - (Fastly donate their service to us). Works really well, amazing fast purging - happy to talk through, or code is in github - we wrote metacpan.org/pod/Catalyst... and metacpan.org/pod/MooseX::...
