As your Member of Congress, one of the top issues I hear about from our community was public safety. Valley families deserve to feel safe at school, at work, at home, and among neighbors. I wanted to share my work to improve public safety so far in Washington. Cracking Down on Fentanyl I voted in favor of the bipartisan HALT Fentanyl Act to keep our families safe from the dangers of fentanyl exposure and crack down on those who bring it into our community. The HALT Fentanyl Act would empower law enforcement to bust drug dealers who traffic in this dangerous drug and would reclassify fentanyl to make sure that those who are found to deal it receive the sentence they deserve. The House passed the HALT Fentanyl Act, but the Senate has failed to vote on this essential legislation. I joined the House Blue Dog Coalition, to call for Senate passage so we can send the bill to President Trump and finally rid our communities of fentanyl. Empowering Law Enforcement Officers Since January, I've supported several bills to empower law enforcement officers and improve our public safety. • The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act makes it a crime to flee from immigration agents or officers who are in performance of their duty. It would ensure that those who endanger law enforcement officers are held accountable. • The Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act would expand the list of deportable crimes to include domestic abuse, child abuse, stalking, and other crimes. • I cosponsored the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act to ensure our firefighters can use every available tool to respond to wildfires and protect the Valley. I will work with anyone-of any political party-who is serious about improving the Valley's public safety. Securing Funding for Public Safety The first opportunity I got in Washington to request community funds in the government funding process, I prioritized public safety and law enforcement officers.
