Evolutionary theory meets ballistics: longevity researchers pondering how cannons shaped extrinsic mortality patterns back in the day. @englishse.bsky.social has a model in mind, @eivimeycook.bsky.social prefers a metaanalysis, @kokkonut.bsky.social maybe thinking if they could shoot kokkonuts...? 🙂

My 1000th iNaturalist observation was a graceful breeding white tern. My 1000th species could hardly be more different: island vs. mainland, tree vs. ground, white vs. black, slender vs. chubby—and thriving vs. dead (likely killed by a feral cat).😟 These contrasts highlight diversity & fragility.

My 1000th observation on iNaturalist @inaturalist.bsky.social was also my first encounter with one of my favourite birds, the white tern, in the magical setting of Tahiti. As a bonus, this photo captures a parent incubating its egg without a nest, a remarkable trait of this species. Amazing!😍

Today would mark the 100th birthday of #GeraldDurrell. I was about the same age as he is on the first picture when I got "the Amateur Naturalist" - which completely captivated me and sparked a lifelong passion for the natural world. Let’s take a moment to remember him & his incredible legacy today.

It was a pleasure to attend Adrián Moreno-Borrello's PhD defense @iphc-strasbourg.bsky.social Interesting discussions about glucose regulation, glycation & #ageing in birds.
