This is truly monstrous. Increased likelihood of offending and increased likelihood of incarceration ARE DIRECT CONSEQUENCES OF THE TRAUMA OF THE ABUSE. This is LITERALLY punishing survivors for experiencing effects of the abuse they endured.
This is despite overwhelming evidence, including in the reports from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into State Abuse, that there is a strong link between the abuse suffered by these people at the hands of the state and subsequent offending.

Gosh. Imagine how much worse it'd be if mentally unwell folks were actual whole human beings and not just family members of normal people.
Desperate and grieving families say they're living with the consequences of the crisis in New South Wales' public mental health system. Their loved ones are part of a group the system does not adequately care for, known as "the missing middle" - people with complex mental health needs who are too unwell for a GP, but not sick enough to be admitted to hospital. Without proper support in the community, their health can deteriorate to a life-threatening point where they need the acute care of a hospital.

Terry Gross: Can you share some of your favorite comments from readers that you've gotten over the years? Maurice Sendak: Oh, there's so many. Can I give you just one that I really like? It was from a little boy. He sent me a charming card with a little drawing. I loved it. I answer all my children's letters-sometimes very hastily-but this one I lingered over. I sent him a postcard and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, "Dear Jim, I loved your card." Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, "Jim loved your card so much he ate it." That to me was one of the highest compliments I've ever received. He didn't care that it was an original drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.

D and I were watching pelicans by the lake and we were like "I bet baby pelicans are adorable!" So we looked them up and, well...
Two baby pelicans in a nest made of dried grass. They look like raw plucked chickens ready for roasting. Their heads are bald, their eyes giant & round, and their beaks pink & saggy. Also, they have comically large webbed feet.
