One update a day, sent directly to a thermal printer in Wes’s house
Today Lauren got paid to go to Pilates so Tom and I went to the maritime museum which was a good way to spend an hour. I loved this painting of the harbour where I work and the whaling stuff was crazy as well. We finished up with a BBQ at home before heading back to work tomorrow

Yesterday Lauren worked a marathon Boxing Day shift making $74/hour and we met up afterwards for a cocktail and fish and chips. I gave Emma and Tom the tour of Macq01 as well, which might have gone better if we had eaten the fish and chips first!

Merry Christmas! We were kept on our toes all day by rain but we fared much better than my parents in -20 at home. We went for a walk, got coffee at the only place open (next door) and played ticket to ride (I lost to Lauren by two points). Then an awesome roast chicken with homemade stuffing (yum)

Christmas Eve yesterday, which meant trying to track down pierogi which is not easy to do in Tasmania. Luckily, the only store that sells them is on the bike path 3km from us and we pass it every day, AND it doubles as a butcher so they are feeding us for the next few days. Welcome to Hobart Emma!

Forgot a few updates! Two days ago was a workday where I found out I won the work scavenger hunt which means Lauren and I are going to the movies with enough snacks to make us throw up. I went to the park afterwards to watch the sk8er bois sk8

Secret Santa at work today! Luckily it is secret because otherwise I would have fought my Santa for giving me skincare products and a furby. But vibes were great. Also chatted with guests from Dubai! Also Lauren and I met after work to eat chicken tenders from Grill’d. Big day.

At work today there was a scavenger hunt where you had to solve clues about items in our hotel… all while pretending to do your real job. After I succeeded at that, we cranked Christmas up to 11 with our housemate Andrea.

Today we lathered up on sunscreen because the sun came out again and everyone was burning within 10 minutes of being outside. We spent most of our time on creative pursuits (Christmas-related) and ate intuitively (dinner at 4pm because we were hungry)

Today started with a gym which was 90% of my steps for the day. I spent the rest of the day working on Lauren’s Christmas present, watching cricket and thinking about the project I’m working on with Pene. I have a few ideas, hopefully I can execute on them tomorrow!

Yesterday’s update is that Christmas is really shaping up in Australia: Santa is riding around on a motorcycle and England is getting crushed at cricket. I dropped off my secret Santa gift for a coworker (a cribbage board with instructions) and went home to my ailing wife who will get me sick soon

Today was a sensory nightmare: began with bagpipes for a UTas grad ceremony, then 4 hours of the hotel entrance being pressure washed (loud), 29 degrees C (with valet cars baking in the sun) and then some guy orders the biggest bouquet of flowers I’ve ever seen

Today we recovered from margaritas with coffee made by Lauren at her workplace (the coffee shop). I was able to get the materials for a very labour-intensive Christmas present for Lauren and started work on it while making a pasta sauce. It’s going to come down to the wire!

Margarita Monday at the Montrose Police Academy! Lauren was supposed to work tonight but it got canceled at the last minute, so we decided to make the most of it in town with our housemate Andrea. Our evening ended up being much more fun as a result!

We had the Christmas party at work today, where I lost to the general manager of the hotel at pool before feeding some fries to a very sweet dog. We started decorating for Christmas in the house, too! We have an artificial tree from the thrift store (decorations included, pics to come)

Today was a fun day. I put myself in coding jail to work on a project while Lauren was at work, then we met up to watch the Perth Scorchers get scorched by the Hobart Hurricanes in the WBBL final (sponsored by Weber Grill). Nothing beats general admission grass seats (regardless of sport)
December 13, 2025 at 12:30 PM
Today I had the day off and Lauren worked which meant I was on chef duty, cooking some salmon with a goat cheese salad on the side. These days, we aren’t adventuring much but are settling into our new stability (for the time being)

Today was a gorgeous sunny day and we biked to MONA, a museum/vineyard/cafe on the river. It’s one of Tasmania’s biggest attractions and it’s less than 5 minutes from our house. We just got coffee and explored the grounds, but we’ll be back sometime for lunch and the museum.

Today I worked 9 hours which meant I got a bonus break which I used to get ice cream at sunset. Besides that, I continued my quest to beat Advent of Code with Excel (I’m almost at the halfway mark) and had quite a few coffees (hard to pass up that work perk)
December 10, 2025 at 12:57 PM
Today it was raining money at the valet stand, and I also got to “sledge” (chat shit) about cricket with some “Poms” (British people who spent a lot of money to watch their team lose in Australia). Ready to do it all again tomorrow
December 9, 2025 at 11:59 AM
Today my work “inducted” me and I learned how to wow guests and also how to avoid electrical hazards. The day finished with a tour and I noticed this old crib board I had never seen before. Always nice to get paid to sit and listen to people talk
December 8, 2025 at 11:22 AM
Today I made it up a big hill on my bike but had a hard time coming back down due to the rain; you can never predict Hobart. I’m also attempting Advent of Code with Microsoft Excel this year since I’m finding myself with a lot of idle time at the valet stand
December 6, 2025 at 12:02 PM
Today we both had the day off and decided to really knuckle down and write our newsletter. It only took us the whole day, but we did get a free 6 pack by finding an elf in a brewery. I also forgot yesterday but it was even less eventful (we bought a coat rack)
December 5, 2025 at 12:52 PM
Started the day by signing up for a new gym (hopefully didn’t accidentally lock into a 3yr contract) and then Lauren and I had coffee on the river. Got to park a few cars today. I also had the innovative idea to start doing Advent of Code using Excel during downtime at work
December 3, 2025 at 1:05 PM
Another long day of making dreams happen (delivering chocolates to rooms). The underrated work perk is actually free lunch: the tuna melt today was divine. Lauren and I followed work up with a Pilates class and then held our roommate Taran hostage so we could read him our newsletter
December 2, 2025 at 11:42 AM
Chill day at work today. Rudely, they scheduled me to work until 11pm on both Christmas Eve AND New Year’s Eve, but I was able to exercise my rights as a casual employee and decline the Christmas shift. Afterwards we made a sushi bowl and I read about the bobsled race at the 1932 Olympics
