Сумарно плями мазуту з російських танкерів, що були виявлені в морі з 18 грудня по 5 січня, могли б покрити понад 1000 км2 моря, що більше за площу Києва. Мазут швидко розносить вітром і періодично плями різного розміру зʼявляються на поверхні у водах поблизу Криму.
