If you want 40K proper. The best trilogy (that includes Ultramarines) is the Dark Imperium Trilogy. I would also recommend the dark comedy Infinite and the Divine. The Fall of Cadia is a one of the biggest events, and Ciaphas Cain series is dark comedy fun. Also Ork books
