From 2005–2010, cultural #appropriation was more common and unchallenged in K-pop. Idols often wore cornrows, dreadlocks, or used #AAVE (African American Vernacular English) without understanding its context. e.g. #T.O.P or #G-Dragon. These acts rarely faced local criticism at the time.

Female artists have now more power in #producing their own music, choose their image and sometimes #challenge old stereotypes. There is now more place for strong female personnalities like #Hwasa in Kpop.

From 2005 to 2010, many #kpop groups used overly #sexualised concepts to attract #attention, often looking for the male gaze. Outfits, lyrics and dances were less subtle and female idols had less control over their image. Which was mainly shaped by male producers and their agency.

Using Mingyu for their campaign along with his friend Jungkook from BTS. In terms of sales, Calvin Klein didn’t get more financial impact. However, in terms of impact in media Mingyu being shirtless approximately the whole campaign made people talk a lot and share the pictures on social media.

Kim Mingi who was at first not planning not be an activist in protests against the government, actually became activist after the government has put pressure onto him and his work.
His musics were hugely influential and used during protests like #Gwangju Uprising.

Former student of the big Korean University #SNU, Kim Mingi was a big Tong Gita artist who wasn’t planning on being an activist in protests for democracy at the time.

Sulli unalived herself after being bullied for being a proud feminist and going opposite way with what Korean society was used to and didn’t publicly apologise for it. Contrary to that, she actually stood on her words and tried to educate people about it.

His agency is probably responsible for making him apologising publicly to not loose a part of his audience? So he apologised but we can still find fan comments that criticised him for apologising instead of taking care of his girlfriend and making sure she doesn’t receive hate for being with him.

As an example we can take Ok #taecyeon going on a trip to Paris with his girlfriend and the photos being leaked. Poor guy had to publicly apologise to his fans in case they got startled by the seen of him being in love when everybody already knew about his relationship???

After the #RockandRoll music genre became popular in Korea in the 1960s to 1970s being a subversive type of music. Sin Junghyeon #신중현 becomes like the « godfather of Korean Rock and Roll » during this era of Korean music and fights against the government’s oppression of making patriotic musics.

Maybe she didn’t have any thought about this at time, but she became a big influence in a societal movement called « Modern boy and Modern girl » which consisted in wearing shorter skirts and hair for women and larger pants for men. Women started smoking.Overall it induced a big change in #ksociety.

We can take Chae Seonyeop 채선엽 as an example of big influence. She was a popular singer of western-style modernised Korean music. She started wearing western-style clothes instead of Hanbok 한복, the traditional Korean clothes.

In the #1930s Korean traditional music was already changing a lot under the Japanese colonial era.
Korean women who were and were not #Giseng (Korean equivalent of a Geisha) started making a lot of music which was already a very big change in the Korean traditional history.
