Nice picture, but this looks a lot like a tri-colored heron with the wire showing on the throat.

They look almost exactly like female mallards, just much darker and with no white edge to the purple speculum. Many people with a lot more experience than I saw it and ID’d it.

Don’t tell anyone I said this, but the females are prettier than than the male tohees. I feel the same way about Myrtle warblers.

It is generally thought to have developed parasitism in order to be able to follow the buffalo herds most of the year as they migrated across the plains. Even stinkers can be fascinating.
