After independence the Finnish Ship's Officers' Union attempted lobby the parliament for the flag to become the civil ensign of an independent Finland, but they were unsuccessful.

It saw sporadic use until at least the 1890's, but eventually faded out of use. In an Italian book of Nordic poetry by Solone Ambrosoli from 1881, the Dagblad flag was used to represent Finland.

The so called Dagblad-flag was particularly popular among seafarers and people in the coastal regions , where its scandinavian connotations were appreciated.

However, the style that the committee criticized as unusual and heraldically baseless, is exactly what Finland ended up adopting in May 1918 as a state flag. Except this time on top of a blue cross.

» One could argue that the flag has too many colours, lacks heraldic basis, and that the manner in which the coat of arms is included is unusual. While Finns can design their flag as they wish, deviating from international flag principles would give an awkward appearance. »

Gallén-Kallela was responsible for designing a wide variety of medals, uniforms, coinage and regimental flags at the time.

Ultimately the flag by Gallén-Kallela was considered too controversial due to its connections with Finnish-Karelian nationalism, and instead a design by A. Kinner which took its colours from the soviet Karelian flag flown in the 1950's.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, East Karelia was once again turned into a republic. Several flags were considered for the new republic, including one based on G-K's flag favoured by ethnic Karelians. Other versions included one with a Finnic notched cross and one based on the naval jack.

East Karelian refugees continued flying the flag by Gallén-Kallela in Finland. An alternate version was also designed by Paavo Jukola in blue-yellow-white with the purpose of creating a flag that was less sombre, but it failed to become popular.

But, the red army denied independence and took over. After the winter war, Karelia was added with lands taken from Finland and turned into the Karelo-Finnish SSR with a new flag. After Stalin's death the flag was changed to include blue and green bars until 1956 when the republic was dissolved.

Using this draft as a basis, they requested the Finnish artist Gallén-Kallela to design a flag for them. He agreed and designed a set of flags and a coat of arms for East Karelia. The flag was in the form of a nordic cross with the colour black added. Stars were replaced with chevrons in the CoA.

Ultimately by 1920 the White Finns and the allied intervention retreated, and the bolshevik red army took over East Karelia. However, in march of 1920, the locals around Uhtua organized and demanded independence. They drafted a flag in red & green with white stars in the form of Ursa Major.

Confusingly, western allies had their own expedition in the area who fought bolsheviks and also Finns, who were close with the Germans. The allies recruited Finnish reds who had lost in the Finnish civil war, and had them carry an orange flag drawn by its Irish commander P.J. Woods

In early 1918, Finnish White forces organized incursions into East Karelia with the aim of kickstarting an anti-bolshevik movement. The so called Viena Expedition occupied the town of Uhtua and flew a blue flag with Ursa Major, designed by finnish artist Jonas Heiska.

The most common type was a lion flag. Lion flags were popular across the political spectrum, even among Finnish nationalists. It naturally evolved to become the first adopted flag for an independent Finland, but was later replaced when the colour red became associated with the Red Guard.

Blue and white flags were preferred by Finnish nationalists, or Fennomans, who wanted to elevate Finnish lagnuage and culture. These colours were ironically taken from Russian Ensigns during the 1860s when Russia was favourable to Finnish nationalism, but now they became appropriated by resistance.

These resistance flags could largely be divided into two groups by colours. Red and yellow were derived from the Swedish era coat of arms of Finland. They were preferred by the Swedish-speaking elite and Svecomans, a movement that advocated for a Scandinavian identity for Finland.

Topelius’ flag was generally well received but the diagonal stripes were criticized. This led him to propose three additional designs in blue-and-white, but ultimately the concept of a unique flag for the Finnish merchant fleet was denied by authorities in 1863.

Politically the colours were also compatible with the naval colours of the Russian Empire (pics). Finland at the time was a grand duchy of Russia, and Topelius’ flag was supposed to be the ensign of the Finnish merchant fleet.

The next year he publicly proposed a blue-and-white flag with diagonal stripes and a white northern star in the middle. He accompanied the proposal with a poem for the flag. Poetically the colours stood for the Finnish waters in summer and winter.

Topelius wrote to his mother from Marstrand:

» Emelie and the girls are currently making the first Finnish flag to ever wave over the Atlantic. Blue and white, with the Finnish lion in a red field. »

Kansanen virheellisesti kirjoittaa artikkelissaan nelipäiväisestä työviikosta. Viitattua tutkimusta luettaessa selviää että kyse on viisiviikkoisen työviikon lyhentämisestä. 10 vuoden aikana työviikko on lyhentynyt n. 4 tuntia. Islantilaiset kuitenkin edelleen työskentelevät pitempään kuin me.
