If yes, and there isn't a real public need to see the image anyway, the answer was don't print it.

Obviously SO much has changed since those days.

But it's making it really hard to engage here without taking on horrific psychological trauma on a daily basis.

Back when newsrooms were the main sources of information, this was taken into account.

In my journalism ethics class in college, my professor called it the "Wheaties test" — would this image deeply disturb the audience first thing in the morning?

Yes, there are times when public information needs should trump our discomfort.

But we've absolutely lost any safeguards or ethical considerations about what gets shared, when, where and why.

The plane crash recently is a good example. How does an individual consumer approach their feed without constant anxiety about what they'll see next?

This can't be good for us.

the customs agent asked if I had anything to declare, “any food or alcohol?” so I told him about the mince pies I got in Heathrow and he was very uninterested it’s like LOOK YOU ASKED
